SeaTac radio stunts and promotions

May 1961 – Frosty Fowler, KING radio, is inexperenced at skydiving, but he recently staged a free fall from an airplane at a height of 2,500 feet with the help of the Seattle Sky Divers Club. Frosty carried a portable tape recorder with him to describe his flight.

November 1964 – Radio KING’s Al Cummings worked a full 24-hour shift as an apprentice deckhand aboard the tug Carol Foss while listeners received regular reports direct from the tug as she cruised Seattle waters.

November 1964 – KVI deejays “paid off” a debt to McChord Air Force Base recently by serving as “Airmen Basics” for the day. The pay-off was a result of a bet made by KVI’s Bob Hardwick on the University of Washington-AFC football game. The KVI men broadcast for 12 hours from four different locations at the air base.

June 1967 – Ric Thomas of KEX/Portland and Dave Clarke of KVI/Seattle, traded programs on May 24. Thomas to tell Seattle listeners about the Rose Festival and Clarke to expound on the Seattle Seafair. Both stations are Golden West outlets.

July 1967 – Hardwick & Jack Morton bring back the soap opera to KVI. “The Return of Helen Trump” Can a woman over 65 find happiness with a man twice her age? Characters in the show included Our Gal Tuesday Wednesday and Charley Musclecramp. The episodes aired seven times daily.

January 30, 1971 – KVI devoted 12 hours to “The Audio-Biography of Radio” produced by KVI program director Jack Bolton, written by KVI promotion director Jack MacDonald, narrated by KVI staff. The show includes bits of “Inner Sanctum,” “Jack Armstrong,” “Tom Mix,” and other shows as well as segments featuring Bing Crosby’s first radio broadcast and Frank Sinatra’s early appearance with the Hoboken Four on the Major Bowes Amateur Hour.”

February 1985 – KVI PD Scott Burton reports that the Solid Gold Oldies format shows the AM station with its best ratings in six years.
