I have been a fan of KVOS for longer than I like to admit. I do recall as a kid being able to pick up the signal from KVOS at our home in Tacoma via our rooftop antenna. It was never a clear picture; a bit snowy and the sound was not clear either but in those days you know, the human race was so happy just being able to take part in daily activities like washing our clothes by banging them on a rock in the nearby river.

Shortly after high school when I was a monkey... Uh, employee at KNWR which was on Sunset Drive in Bellingham and later at KPUG I was able to see KVOS loud and clear. I still watch it on our Interstellar DogDishNetwork TV service. They're showing some great ol' shows!

This is sad, unfortunate and yet it is not surprising. The business of radio in the "on air" sense began screwing itself years ago with a need and greed for more and more money, while at the same time not "keeping up with the Jonses," meaning not coming up with a plan to deal with advancing technologies, i.e., internet and satellite radio, iPods, etc..

I have never met this man but I'm sure he's a great guy, just like a lot of the great guys and gals I have known in the business at one level or another. It really sucks to see an industry so falling apart that it's decision makers are causing the medium itself to self-destruct, while at the same time cannibalizing the very real people who have made the product so great over the years.

Sad to say, I think radio is a black hole in many ways. After losing my job some months ago, I was encouraged by a friend to apply for a radio position in the city where my friend lives. I laughed and said I would rather work at K-Mart. Last year I had the pleasure of meeting up with an associate whom I worked with in radio in the 1980's. He is now working in a completely different industry, and as he put it: "Radio is a great business to get out of." Well put..

And best of luck to Mr. Pust. People like him DO bounce back. I have no doubt that he will.

The change to identification of stations, not by call letters, but by the name of a mascot or format, BUZZARD, EAGLE, WOLF, WARM, LITE, FRESH...has been happening for years. Call letters have become less important. But ask most people what they listen to, and I will bet they identify the dial position more often than the cutesy name.

I've noticed something during the last year or two. Stations are increasingly going with station ID's that refer to the "brand" as opposed to the stations call letters. I've noticed this going on with stations not just in Seattle but other areas as well. I wonder if this has something to do with the idea that owners and programmers are trying to really embrace internet radio. My point is, you can't make your brand on internet radio with call letters. Using your call letters creates an image that you're still in a city some place, not world wide.

In the case of KJR FM (or whatever they are now), this may not be the case, they may be changing call letters, or just not identifying much.

Speaking of KJR FM, I'm not too thrilled from what I've heard. I'm hearing "Against The Wind" by Bob Seger and numerous Neil Diamond songs. That's nothing new or fresh. That's the same crap KJR played the last time they were an oldies station. But I haven't listened much so to be fair I just may have tuned in at a bad time.

The best oldies station I have ever heard on the internet is Real Oldies 1600 (KRKE AM) in Albuquerque. Their station does not pound out a lot of watts AM station at 1600 on the AM band and I'm not sure that many people actually listen to the AM source. But they have a rather good sized (and growing) following on the internet, and they have real DJ's who do radio just like it was done when the oldies were a stack of wax. Nice station.

Odd... It seemed like oldies in Seattle were gone for good, never to return. Now it seems everyone is jumping on the oldies band wagon? At last count if you count AM & FM, there is what... 3 Oldies stations now in the Seattle area? Does this have anything to do with the increase of the availability of medicinal marijuana? Or have people come to their senses? Or maybe half way to their senses? As for hearing The Platters, Bobby Darin, and similar artists, I hate to say it but I doubt it. Program Managers in radio these days are not old enough to know who those artists are. But... Will take what good there is and enjoy it!

I believe in the early 70's <?> there was a local show on either KTVW or KPEC that was an attempt at a kids show; I recall a young guy with glasses in a superhero outfit showing cartoons or something. I can remember that but don't remember last week.

"The frequency cannot be used for commercial purposes under current FCC rule."

That is sort of misleading. No one is making money in radio these days, therefore, there is no commercial radio. There is radio with commercials, but that's different...

KMCQ is on my presets in my car along with KIXI, KOMO, KIRO, KVI & KING FM.
I think KMCQ will be sold to the Mexicans who will use it for a Hispanic news, sports or religious station. Three things we don't need.

So, these bigwigs, who have a lot of financial backing, can't seem to fully launch Hit Parade Radio. It remains a voice-tracked pop version of Music of Your Life for Boomers.
When - and IF - Hit Parade Radio finally hits the Internet airwaves, will they get a network of terrestrial stations going also? I really doubt it. Their mistake may be, streaming it free on the Internet. What value is there for a radio station in Moscow, Idaho to broadcast Hit Parade Radio versus it's own automated playlist of 3000 Billboard chart hits?
