1. Memories mark Cheney's final game - The final game at the ballpark we recognize as Cheney Stadium was not an evening for mourning. It was a time, instead, to savor memories, in the happy knowledge that the baseball field itself – the diamond in the soon-to-be wreckage – isn’t going anywhere.
And though the first-place Rainiers were the official home team Thursday night, the navy blue trimming on their white uniforms might as well have been the orange and black of the Tacoma Giants.

 2. Raiders beat Seahawks 27-24 in exhibition finale - Bruce Gradkowski threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter and the Oakland Raiders mostly used backups to end the preseason with a 27-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night.
Kyle Boller also threw a touchdown pass and Swayze Waters kicked two field goals for the Raiders (3-1), who were more focused on staying healthy than winning their final exhibition game.
 3. Bellingham man goes border to border on single tank of gas - Craig Henderson said Thursday he broke his world record for fuel economy, proving again that his aerodynamic Avion sports car can drive from border to border on a single tank of gas.
The Tacoma native started the venture Sunday, determined to show the car he built 25 years ago gets the most miles per gallon of any vehicle.

 4. Rock throwers hit cars in multiple incidents in Tacoma, Lakewood - Local law enforcement authorities were investigating at least eight rock-throwing incidents Wednesday night and Thursday in Pierce County.
No drivers were seriously hurt, but nerves were rattled.

 5. Spokane: Arrested white supremacist behind alleged identity theft scheme - An alleged identity theft scheme by a white supremacist who federal prosecutors describe as a "perpetual criminal" was dismantled this week across the Spokane area.
Wayde Lynn Kurt, 52, is in the Spokane County Jail awaiting a decision from U.S. Magistrate Cynthia Imbrogno on whether he can be released pending trial on a federal weapons charge.
 6. Feds uncover opium poppy smuggling operation at Bellingham discount store - Six men were arrested Wednesday, Sept. 1, on suspicion of intending to smuggle into Canada opium poppies that they allegedly picked up at a Bellingham discount store.
Immigrations and Customs and Enforcement agents tailed a vehicle containing four of the men as it drove to the Dollar Plus store in the 4100 block of Meridian Street.
 7. Airport official: plane crashes outside Dubai - An aircraft believed to be a cargo plane crashed Friday outside Dubai, an airport official said. There was no immediate word on casualties.
Some unconfirmed reports said the plane went down on a stretch of highway, but the state news agency WAM reported the crash was in an unpopulated desert area.
 8. Pilot injured in chopper crash on Calif. highway - A helicopter has crashed on a busy California highway in Salinas, sending its pilot to the hospital and snarling traffic.
The California Highway Patrol says the helicopter landed upside-down onto Highway 101 shortly after 6 a.m. Friday. The crash happened near Salinas Municipal Airport.
 9. Raiders beat Seahawks 27-24 in exhibition finale - OAKLAND – Pete Carroll’s first preseason as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks ended with a thud Thursday night, as his team lost its third straight game, a 27-24 loss to the Oakland Raiders at a mostly empty Oakland Coliseum.
Most of Seattle’s key starters did not play, including quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, linebackers Lofa Tatupu and Aaron Curry, and cornerback Marcus Trufant.

 10. Cheney closes, Tacoma loses - The Tacoma Rainiers closed what they call “original Cheney Stadium” Thursday the same way the Tacoma Giants opened the place in 1960: with a loss.
The Rainiers ran into too much Colorado Springs pitching to overcome a wobbly first inning, and fell to the Sky Sox, 3-1.
