Kathi Goertzen, absent anchor of the evening news on KOMO TV 4, recently underwent surgery again for a brain tumor which has affected her facial nerves. Kathi says “This turn of events has caused me to think quite a bit about appearances and what really makes us who we are. It’s also caused me to reconsider the way I always used to plan for tomorrow, instead of enjoying the present day.”

Oldest Northwest Radio Stations

1922 was a big year for broadcasting in Washington. It was Year One for radio. The first radio station in the State of Washington was not located in Seattle or Tacoma, but in Spokane. 590 KAQQ, later KHQ, now KQNT, [Feb 28]. Next was Vincent Kraft’s experimental station, which became KJR, Seattle [Mar 9].

South Sound residents got their own station on March 30, as KGY 1240 began broadcasting. Those original call letters continue to be used by the station, still owned by members of the Kerry family after all these years.

Tacoma’s KMO 1360 took to the airwaves on March 30. The station dropped those great call letters in 1984, for KAMT. You can’t get the three letter calls back once you change them and the station later went with the call letters KKMO.

KTW 1250 Seattle started programming on April 22. The station is now KKDZ.

Finally, another station for Seattle on May 23, 1300 KDZE, a station that later had a set of three-letter calls, KOL, and tossed them away. After being KMPS for many years, the closest they could come to the classic call letters was KKOL.

Dale Hubbard hosts Dick Pust on KMAS

It was a good hour of reminiscing as 1030 KMAS/Shelton hosted former KGY air personality Dick Pust Wednesday morning. Hear the interview on the KMAS website — Dick Pust interviewed by Dale Hubbard on KMAS 1030…

These recordings also feature snippets of vintage airchecks from Dick Pust at KGY.

Honoring the service of Dick Pust

Two South Sound radio stations will take occasion to honor longtime KGY morning host, Dick Pust, this week. On-air, KMAS 1030 Shelton will have Pust in the studio during the 9 o’clock hour for an interview with Dale Hubbard.

Mixx 96.1 KXXO will host a community event – open to the public – in the meeting room at KXXO, January 20 at 5:30 pm.

Dick Pust served the community for 51 years at KGY radio. Management there kicked him to the curb, without providing him an opportunity to say goodbye on-air, or to allow the public to thank him for the many years of entertainment his programming providing to the South Sound region. Kudos to these two stations for these efforts.

Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson said of television: “The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason.”

The same can certainly be said of certain radio stations.

Dick Pust shafted by KGY Inc.

Olympian– After a career spanning 51 years with KGY Radio, local broadcasting legend Dick Pust’s career with the station ended suddenly Wednesday when he was let go as the station’s general manager.

He hosted his final early-morning radio show Wednesday at the iconic station that overlooks Budd Inlet, the last installment of a six-day-a-week broadcast that began at 5:30 a.m. and has run since 1967.

“I’m in shock,” said Pust about the sudden end to his connection to KGY, which broadcasts at 1240 on the AM dial and at 96.9 on FM.

On the AM Dial: South Sound MusicRadio

Dick Pust has been the voice of 1240 KGY [Olympia] morning drive for over 40 years! KGY plays adult contemporary music and has a local air staff. The station began operation in 1922, so is one of the pioneer stations of the Pacific Northwest [maintaining the 3-letter call sign to this day]. The KGY studios have been in the same waterfront location since 1960

Sunrise to sunset, a very unique mix of music airs on 680 KBRD/Olympia. This non-profit station plays jazz, rock, swing [and western swing], dixie, country, ragtime, novelty tunes and zydeco [ZYDECO - Usually fast tempo and dominated by the button or piano accordion and a form of a washboard known as a "rub-board," "scrub-board," or frottoir, zydeco music was originally created at house dances, where families and friends gathered for socializing. - Wikipedia] Listening to KBRD takes one a step back in time. The music was originally recorded on cylinders and 78 rpm vinyl discs. KBRD gained recognition nationally, when it was named the nation’s 9th Best Station in the country by E! Entertainment. There are no announcers at KBRD, although the station does air a couple of specialty prgrams on the weekend, including Rhythm Sweet & Hot on Saturday and a show hosted by Ian Whitcomb on Sunday.

Actual “live” DJs are playing the Oldies daily on 1030 KMAS/Shelton. The jocks are not only live but also local. The on-air lineup includes longtime South Sound air talent Randy Roadz. KMAS maintains a partnership with the Mason County Daily News, keeping listeners in touch with the latest local news and events.

1420 KITI/Centralia is yet another station maintaining a presence in the community with local DJs and community news. The station sponsors and participates in events such as this year’s Southwest Washington Fair. The airstaff are all fairly young. Stations like KITI are the farm teams from which rise the few exceptional DJs that make a career of broadcasting.
Music stations on AM seemed to be a dying breed a few years ago, yet there are those stations, several in the South Sound area, that continue to thrive. They must be doing something right.
